Crooked teeth and misaligned jaws can be a real pain in the neck. Not only do they ruin your smile’s appearance, but they can secretly cause frequent headaches, jaw pain, and even TMJ disorder. Minor cosmetic treatments like bonding and veneers can correct one or two teeth, but more complex cases require a more holistic approach. However, our expert orthodontists at Gold Coast Dental Buena Park are here to help, fixing even the most complicated and severe problems to create your perfect smile.
No two smiles are exactly alike, and our team personalizes our treatments to fit yours exactly. We want you to straighten your smile on your terms, providing multiple orthodontic options so your treatment is a complete success. From metal and clear braces to Invisalign and more, your journey to a straighter smile will be smooth-sailing. Traditional bracket braces are the most comprehensive, correcting the most severe issues in 18 months to 3 years. Clear aligners can handle mild and moderate orthodontic problems in a fraction of the time, streamlining the process so you can enjoy your new and improved smile in as little as 8 months.
It’s time to finally say goodbye to crowded, crooked smiles for good! Please call our Buena Park dental office at (714) 278-4978 today to schedule a consultation with one of our orthodontists.
The Advantages of a Straighter Smile
What's not to like about a lovely, straight smile?

Better dental hygiene
Crooked teeth and crossbite create nooks and crannies that make brushing and flossing your teeth properly a struggle. This often leads to cavities and gingivitis! Correcting your smile can help you maintain a better oral hygiene routine and keep your smile healthier.

Enhanced self-esteem
With a more attractive smile often comes greater confidence and self-esteem. There’s no need to hide your smile anymore out of embarrassment! Plus, smiling more has proven benefits, including improved moods, better relationships, and greater personal and professional success. A more appealing smile is generally accompanied by an increase in self-esteem.

Improved speech and easier eating
Orthodontic issues can keep the teeth and jaws from coming together correctly, causing speech problems like lisps and difficulty eating. Dental braces and aligners can make mealtimes easier and keep your speech clearer.

Healthier teeth
Crooked and uneven teeth are at higher risk of cracking and chipping, either from falls, impacts, or simply grinding your teeth at night. Even if you can’t see them, minor damage can quickly become a larger problem, leading to more significant damage and tooth infection.

Jaw pain and fewer headaches
Bite problems often put unwanted and unhealthy pressure on your teeth and jaws, leading to recurring side effects like jaw pain and headaches. In some cases, TMJ disorder can develop.
Our Orthodontic Treatment Options
Our dental office offers multiple types of braces, so you can fully customize your orthodontic treatment
Metal Braces: With traditional dental braces, metal brackets, wires, and elastics apply a gentle but consistent force to your teeth and jaws that progressively moves your smile into position. This system puts pressure on your entire tooth, from top to bottom, so our orthodontists can get right to the “root” of your bite’s issues. Metal braces can correct severe and complex orthodontic problems, from large gaps and severe crossbite to teeth that need to be rotated or moved vertically. Treatment typically takes between 18 and 36 months.
Clear Braces: If you need the comprehensive approach of metal braces but don’t like the look, clear braces are an excellent option. These orthodontic braces use ceramic brackets, thinner wires, and transparent elastic ligatures to make your treatment less noticeable and blend in with your smile. The ceramic brackets are stain-resistant, so they can remain hidden throughout your treatment. Clear braces are just as effective as metal braces, treating even the most severe bites with ease. Like with classic braces, you can complete your treatment in 18 to 36 months.
Invisalign: For a totally invisible look, Invisalign is the clear choice. Clear aligners forego brackets and wires altogether for transparent trays molded to your exact smile. Each tray focuses on a specific problem area of your mouth at a time. This targeted treatment makes for a faster and more comfortable experience. Invisalign is also entirely removable, so you can easily take them out for meals and dental hygiene. Keep your diet and flossing routine as-is—as long as you wear your trays for at least 22 hours each day. While not quite as effective as bracket braces, clear aligners can correct mild and moderate bite problems in just 8 to 18 months!

What happens if you don't wear Invisalign for a whole 24 hours?
Unlike braces, clear aligners only need to be worn 22 hours each day to be completely effective. However, if you don’t meet the full time requirements, it’s not the end of the world (or your smile.) While your progress may be slightly slower, you can still achieve your perfect smile by wearing your tray a little longer. Patients who forget to wear their aligners for a few days may find that their current tray no longer fits. They will need to return to the next previous one that fits without forcing it in and continue forward from there to make up for lost progress.
-
What can you not eat while wearing braces?
To prevent bending wires or popping off brackets, please avoid eating hard, crunchy, chewy, or sticky foods with braces. This includes popcorn, nuts, bagels, hard or gummy candies, chewing gum, and ice. You should also cut foods that you bite into with your front teeth into smaller pieces, like corn on the cob, carrots, and apples. With clear aligners, there are no food restrictions as long as you take out your trays when eating or drinking anything other than water.
-
How long do I need to wear braces?
The exact length of orthodontic treatment depends on the type of braces and your bite’s severity. Bracket braces usually require 18 months to 3 years of treatment, while Invisalign averages 8 to 18 months. Some patients with minor issues may need as little as 6 months. After either treatment, you will need to wear a teeth retainer for at least a year to stabilize your smile and prevent you from losing your hard-won progress.
-
What age is best for braces?
While adults can still achieve beautiful smiles with braces, orthodontic treatment is faster and more comfortable when started between 11 and 14 years old. During this time, most or all adult teeth have come in, but the jaw is still growing. This lets braces and aligners work with and guide young patients’ developing smiles more effectively with less pressure and time needed.
-
Can I still kiss with braces?
Yes. While many people have an image of braces interlocking painfully when kissing, crossed wires are only a dental myth. While kissing might feel a little different, for you and your partner, it’s perfectly safe to do so. However, since your teeth will be sore for the first few weeks, we recommend taking kissing off of the agenda until your mouth adjusts to the pressure.
-
What is the purpose of retainer?
A retainer keeps your corrected smile in place after finishing braces or aligners. For several months after treatment, your teeth and jaws will want to shift back to their old positions until they finally stabilize. This stabilization process usually takes 9 months to a year. You will need to wear your teeth retainer 24/7 throughout this period to prevent your smile from slipping out of alignment.
