PPO Dental Insurance

What does it mean to have a dental PPO plan at our office?

At Gold Coast Dental, we accept all PPO plans and are in-network with most, from Delta Dental and UnitedHealthcare to Aetna and Cigna dental insurance. What is PPO dental insurance? PPO, or Preferred Provider Organization, plans are typically higher cost than HMO plans, but they offer an unmatched range of freedom. PPO providers have the largest networks of dentists in the country. However, even if our office isn’t in your specific network, you can still receive partial coverage for your treatments. Additionally, PPO plans don’t require that patients declare a primary care dentist. This means that if a dental emergency strikes while you’re on vacation or you need specialist care,

like braces or oral surgery, you don’t need to wait weeks for a referral. You can receive the coverage you need when you need it as long as that dentist accepts your plan. However, PPO plans also have yearly deductibles and annual maximums, both for in-network care and a combination of in- and out-of-network care. If you expect to need major work like orthodontics or dental implants, we recommend checking with your provider beforehand to plan your treatments on your budget. Our caring dentists are more than happy to help if you need us. We want your care at our office to always be stress-free and affordable. Feel free to call us at (714) 278-4978 to schedule a consultation today.

What Insurance Covers

Even the best dental insurance has its limitations, so knowing your coverage is essential.

Dental insurance doesn’t cover everything. Each provider and plan is different, so it’s important to know what your specific plan covers and how much. This allows you to look ahead and plan for certain treatment that you know you and your family will need throughout the year.

However, most dental insurance plans follow a basic 100-80-50 structure, with some variations:

Preventive Dentistry (100% covered):
two annual dental cleanings and exams, fluoride treatments, sealants
Basic Procedures (80% covered):
dental fillings, extractions, root canals
Major Treatments (50% covered):
dental crowns, bridges, and more

Elective treatments like cosmetic dentistry (teeth whitening, bonding, veneers, etc.) are not covered.

However, providers like Delta Dental Insurance may also include orthodontics coverage, such as braces and Invisalign. Dental implant insurance is rare, though some full coverage dental insurance plans will provide for the implant’s crown, excluding the titanium implant or abutment. If you have any questions for our team about your coverage, feel free to call (714) 278-4978 and schedule a consultation today.

  • Which is better: PPO or HMO dental insurance?

If you’re not on a strict budget, PPO plans are generally better than HMO plans. PPOs are much more flexible to patients’ needs, requiring no referrals and providing a wider range of in-network dentists. This makes getting specialist and emergency care quicker and easier. And even if the dentist you see isn’t in your specific network, you can still often get some level of coverage.

  • How do I know if a dentist takes my insurance?

Ask us! Feel free to call us any time as our phones are open 24/7 to help our patients whenever they need us. However, you can also check directly with your provider. Most insurance companies have easy-to-use online dentist locators, so you can easily find us through their directories.

  • What if my employer does not offer dental insurance?

If your employer doesn't offer dental benefits, you can always buy a plan for yourself and your family. Please don’t hesitate to make an appointment with us if you need help choosing a great plan. We’ll discuss your options so you make the best decision. If you’re not looking to buy your own plan, you can also use one of our office’s alternative financing options: CareCredit, LendingClub, and Denefits.

  • How much is dental insurance?

Each insurance plan is different, with costs varying based on the provider and the type of plan. In general, PPO plans are more expensive than HMOs. Full coverage dental insurance is also more costly than those with less coverage.

  • Which is the best dental insurance?

Different providers have different strengths, but some of the top ones are Cigna, Delta Dental, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, and Physicians Mutual. Cigna is often considered one of the best providers overall for its broad networks and orthodontics and restorative treatment coverage. Delta Dental is also great for patients looking for orthodontics care. Humana offers great value of coverage for low-rate basic plans. UnitedHealthcare is great for families, with a combination of both preventive and orthodontics coverage. Physicians Mutual is a great choice when considering dental insurance for seniors, offering specialized prices for a senior’s budget.

  • Is dental insurance worth it in retirement?

Dental insurance can be valuable for seniors as their smiles age and dental problems become more common. Cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss are just a few of the many issues that older patients need help with, so insurance can make necessary treatments stress-free and affordable. If you need help finding a senior-friendly insurance plan, please don’t hesitate to call our office today.
